Thane

HIKARU’S TROUBLED LOOK concerned Thane as they made their way to his quarters on the station. He didn’t mention it until they were once again safely behind closed doors. The moment the door shut, he turned to the Inquisitor.

“What’s wrong?”

“I can’t understand what would bring Galen Horn here.” Hikaru paced the room in a small circle as he spoke. “Sure, it would be an easy enough place to slip out of Unity reach—but that’s the thing. He was already out of Unity reach. As far as I know, we had no idea where he was or what he’d been doing.”

Thane was surprised to hear someone who worked for the Unity admit failure, and he wanted to make a biting comment regarding the “all-powerful” reach of the Unity, but remained silent. As much as he liked making scathing comments, he wanted to hear where Hikaru was going with this, especially after what they’d heard from Travin.

“It didn’t make sense to me for him to come here. He’d have an easier time at a space station in a distant quadrant, somewhere he’d draw less attention. It also didn’t make sense to me that he remained here after arriving. He’d have known that word had reached the Unity—which is another matter altogether—so why didn’t he slink away when he had the chance? The longer he stays here the more likely it is he won’t be able to escape.”

Thane caught on to Hikaru’s train of thought. “Galen Horn is certainly no idiot, so if he’s staying here, it’s because he’s got something planned.”

Hikaru nodded, expression grim. “Andross Station is one of the most trafficked space stations in the entire Unity of Planets. It’s close not only to Terran space but to Iluxan space as well. Ambassadors of various systems are known to visit here often.”

As he spoke, dark realization filled Hikaru’s words. Thane feared what he would say, but he had to ask. “What…what are you thinking?”

“Galen Horn is here to perpetrate an attack against the Unity of Planets.”

As much as Thane’s first instinct was to reject the possibility, he knew it wouldn’t be the first time Galen Horn had committed terrorism. One of his biggest crimes to date was the bombing of a UP governmental office on a Terran colony planet. One hundred thirty life-forms were killed and more injured.

An attack on Andross Station would make that look novice.

Thane couldn’t help thinking of the countless innocent life-forms on the station, beings who’d committed no crimes, who weren’t officers of the UP. Their only fault would be coming to Andross Station. It would cause the sort of terror and mayhem that someone like Galen Horn thrives on.

“We have to do something,” Thane said. Horn and the bounty fell into the background. This was so much bigger than nuyen; the lives of hundreds of thousands—maybe even millions—of life-forms was at stake.

“Yes, we do.” Hikaru nodded.

“Why are you pursuing this so hard?” Thane asked him. “You said Horn is tangentially connected to your mission here—but it seems like Horn is your entire focus.
